چکیده

We show that the decay of a passive scalar θ advected by a random incompressible flow with zero correlation time in the Batchelor limit can be mapped exactly to a certain quantum-mechanical system with a finite number of degrees of freedom. The Schrödinger equation is derived and its solution is analyzed for the case where, at the beginning, the scalar has Gaussian statistics with correlation function of the form e−|x−y| 2 . Any equal-time correlation function of the scalar can be expressed via the solution to the Schrödinger equation in a closed algebraic form. We find that the scalar is intermittent during its decay and the average of |θ|α (assuming zero mean value of θ) falls as e−γαDt at large t, where D is a parameter of the flow, γα = 1 4α(6 − α) for 0 < α < 3, and γα = 9 4 for α ≥ 3, independent of α. Simulation of Low Reynolds Number Isotropic Turbulence Including the Passive Scalar

Full simulations of homogeneous isotropic turbulence containing a homogeneous passive scalar were made at low Reynolds numbers and various Prandtl numbers. The results show that the spectral behavior of the two fields are quite similar; both fields decay as power-law functions of time. However. the decay exponent is quite dependent on both the Reynolds and Prandtl numbers. The decay exponent of...

Anomalous scaling for a passive scalar near the Batchelor limit

A class of phenomenological Hopf equations describing mixing of a passive scalar by random flow close to the Batchelor limit ~i.e., advection by random strain and vorticity! is analyzed. In the Batchelor limit multipoint correlators of the scalar are constructed explicitly by exploiting the SL (N ,R) symmetry of the Hopf operator. Hopf equations close to this ‘‘integrable’’ limit are solved via...

Direct numerical simulation of passive scalar in decaying compressible turbulence

The passive scalars in the decaying compressible turbulence with the initial Reynolds number (defined by Taylor scale and RMS velocity) Re=72, the initial turbulent Mach numbers (defined by RMS velocity and mean sound speed) Mt=0.2-0.9, and the Schmidt numbers of passive scalar Sc=2-10 are numerically simulated by using a 7 order upwind difference scheme and 8 order group velocity control schem...

Numerical simulation of incompressible turbulent flow in shrouded disk system with radial outflow

The flow behavior inside the shrouded disk system is of importance in appropriate design of turbomachinery cavities and turbine test cell hydraulics dynamometer. The turbulent incompressible flow is analyzed for the shrouded disk system with axial clearance. The flow core behaves as a Batchelor type structure when a weak inflow is imposed on the disk cavity. By increasing the inflow, the centra...
